ARTIST NUMBA ONE: James Jean

(Of course I would begin my blog posts with my favorite artist of all time. It only seemed appropriate)
James Jean is a well-known modern illustrator. His work is featured on anything from comic books to wallpaper to Prada bags. A Taiwanese American by birth, Jean's main area of focus is illustration. He uses watercolors, ink, oil and acrylic paint, and digital drawing to create winsome scenes that have surrealist themes. He has won six Eisner Awards for "Best Cover Artist", although he has recently retired from advertising art to focus on his personal work.
The work of James Jean is inspiring to me because it holds so many key facets of art that I love. His work is very realistic and detailed, but includes creative and imaginative twists. There is a darker element to his work that draws attention to the various sides of the imagination. I am hoping to illustrate a book for my Senior Sem project with a feel similar to the work of James Jean. He has inspired me my entire career as an artist and will continue to do so as I continue on.
