ARTIST NUMBA FOUR: Gris Grimley

Gris Grimley is a popular children's book illustrator and been published by Scholastic, HarperCollins, Random House Publishers, and many more. His style is described as "dark and whimsical", and he flows mostly toward horror-themed stories such as Frankenstein, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and tales from Edgar Allen Poe. His illustrations seem to span the gap between comic book art and children's book pictures, which is not always an easy task to do. The varying shades of grey and sepia with spots of color also really create the atmosphere and feel of the stories.
I feel like Gris Grimley may be one of the key artists that I study throughout this project. One thing I need to learn more about is how to layout book pages and text, and Grimley uses very creative designs to keep the reader engaged. He uses cropped freeze frames, overlapping images, and blown up close-ups to tell the story rather that the normal 1-page picture, 1-page text set up.
